WHAT YOU HAVE MISSED HERE AT PAPPY'S CAFE
SATURDAY - JANUARY 28th

Local talent that you need to come down to see & hear, check out his links then come to Pappy's Cafe and enjoy...
I'm just a guy who loves to play guitar. I'm just trying to take it to another level. I started playing guitar when I was 9, I had no intentions of becoming a singer. All I wanted to do, was play like Slash. For 6 years I played as hard as i could until I was good enough. Just after I turned sixteen I started revealing songs that I had written years ago and playing and singing them live. Now I have my EP 'This is My Way' coming out soon, and hopefully an awesome future coming my way. :)

BROCK ZEMAN

With
eight-albums to his name and a few hundred live performances every year
for almost a decade, singer-songwriter Brock Zeman is
well-established
as one of the Ottawa Valley’s hardest working musicians. All of this
before the age of 30. He’s also highly regarded, having
earned
praise from critics across the country. Exclaim! magazine says Zeman
“is a songwriter worth hearing over and over again,” CKUA hails Zeman’s
work as “intelligent, tuneful, heart-felt songs served up with an
authentic but understated style” and the KW Record says that “Zeman
doesn’t surrender an inch to any Texas singer/songwriter you care to
name. Closer to home, he has the chops to join the likes of Fred
Eaglesmith on the lonesome outskirts of town after the street lights
come on.”

Zeman has also played on stage with some of the top talent of the
contemporary roots and Americana scenes, including Steve Earle, Lynn
Miles, Fred Eaglesmith, Corb Lund, Toby Keith, Prairie Oyster and the
Rodeo Kings, to name a select few. Keith Glass of Prairie Oyster calls
him, “an emerging Canadian powerhouse,” while Juno-award winner, Lynn
Miles says “he’s a master songwriter…he belongs on stage with the big
boys.” By his mid-20s, Zeman signed with Busted Flat Records and had
played most major music festivals in the country. So marks the first fine
chapter in Zeman’s music trajectory.
Don't miss this guy.... he's crazy! -Just look at him!

ANDREA RAMOLO
FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 9TH

Since
releasing her debut album “Thank You For the Ride” in October of 2008,
Andrea Ramolo has become known as the “tireless road warrior” having
completed two East Coast tours, gigs all over Ontario, and a Nashville
showcase. Most impressive, however, was the five month cross Canada tour
of 80 shows that she booked all herself, from Ontario to the West
coast, up to the Yukon, and all the way to Newfoundland and back.
After
40,000 kms of living in her van and developing a fan base all over the
great North, Andrea is set to be working on her second release. She’s
been described as the antidote to too much Joni Mitchell, a tougher
Dolly Parton, a sexier Janis Joplin, and has even been compared to
Canada’s own Serena Ryder; but Ramolo has a sound that is all her own.
Drawing stories from real life experiences, her songs are direct, to the
point, funny, sexy, and vulnerable all at the same time. She is a born
performer who oozes confidence and sensuality and has been described as
fearless, raw, and emotional.

This
past year, Andrea was featured at the South Country Fair in Alberta,
the Sunstroke Music Festival in Whitehorse, the Saskatoon Berry Festival
in Mortlach, In the Dead of Winter Music Festival in Halifax, The
Sasquatch Festival in Northern Alberta and The World Skills Festival at
the Calgary Stampede grounds.
Andrea has shared the stage with
Stacey Earle and Mark Stuart, Colin Linden, Twilight Hotel, Coco Love
Alcorn, and Slowcoaster (to name a handful), and has lent her vocal
talents to recordings for The Trews, Martha and the Muffins, Cindy
Doire, and The Strip. In 2009, she won the Toronto Exclusive Magazine
awards for Best Female Folk Artist, Best Folk Album, and Best Blues
Song. She was also asked to be a guest speaker at the 2009 Ontario
Council of Folk Festivals Conference in Ottawa on booking independent
tours. This young woman has years of songwriting, singing, and success
ahead of her.
Andrea was cast in Disney’s made-for-TV movie Once Upon a Mattress, starring Carol Burnett and Tracy Ullman. She recorded two songs for the movie’s soundtrack at the CBC in Vancouver.
Hey, if she is good if enough for old Walt Disney.... then she is good enough for Pappy's Cafe!

PAPPY'S CAFE WELCOMES
KIRBY

Sometimes you have to take a giant leap to do what you love. (John) Kirby is one of the few who realized this claim and knew it to be true. Throwing in the towel on his lucrative Nine to Fiver’ in 2008, KIRBY took on music as a full time pursuit and started paving the way to happiness as well as success. Almost immediately, Kirby was hitting the road for the first of 5 solo tours across Canada over the next year and a half, and now with his new band ‘Leominster’ and their upcoming release, KIRBY is poised and ready for the next step.
Playing and writing music since age 16, KIRBY fronted Burlington, Ontario prog-rock band ‘First Time Fallen’ for several years and released his first solo EP “Within These Walls” in 2007 before taking the figurative plunge with his next EP “The Good Fight”, in 2008. His sound displays his true passion, as he belts out emotional lyrics right from the bottom of his heart, coupled with the diversity of both a driving rock strum style and quiet thoughtful picking on the guitar, reminiscent of Nick Drake, John Mayer or Dallas Green. Though mostly acoustic in nature, KIRBY displays an obvious penchant for writing epic rock songs, soon to be realized through the full sound of his band Leominster.

In the short time that he has put the gears to the indie music scene, KIRBY has enjoyed many notable experiences such as appearing at ArtsWells Festival, the C&C Music Festival and the Burlington Sound of Music Festival, where he is currently in his 3rd year running “Acoustic Side” to raise funds for charities. He’s shared the stage with the likes of The Watchmen, Wax Mannequin, and Lindy of Major Maker, among others, and received regular rotation on C101 Mohawk Radio for “The Good Fight” EP. KIRBY also started C&B Records, which has released multiple compilations of independent artists under the ‘Mix Tape Series’. He co-wrote and produced the trailer for popular film fest flick “Sons of The Sunshine.

FRIDAY AUGUST 5THDON AMERO AND
THE GREAT WOODEN TRIO
Don
Amero remembers it well. It was the day that changed his life. On
September 15, 2007, he walked off his job as a hardwood flooring
installer and set out to pursue music fulltime. And what a good day that
turned out to be! In the past four years, Don has released three albums
that generated two national awards and twelve nominations. He has
toured the country from coast-to-coast, been invited to play festivals,
been asked to perform with symphony accompaniment, and appeared on
national television concerts. While a lot has happened for Don in a
seemingly short time, in actuality, it was a long road for him to get to
where he is today.
Now working his third album, The Long Way Home was released in the fall of 2010. With impeccable production and presentation, The Long Way Home is receiving great reviews from media, and generating excitement among fans. The country-flavoured first single Right Where I Wanna Be has been featured on radio stations across Canada, and continues to climb the charts. It is also widely distributed – along with his first two albums – to HMV, 34 CD Plus stores across Canada, and is available on Itunes, Amazon, CD baby and other digital outlets.

Brad Woods performs on his own as well as with the Great Wooden Trio (GWT). He and members of the GWT have spent the summer touring Manitoba and North Western Ontario. Woods’ material includes myths, legends, ballads, and original compositions.

Woods is a former director of the Storytellers School of Toronto, and was the recipient of the 2002 Anne Smythe Travel Grant for storytelling and the 2004 Storyteller in Residence at the Guelph Civic Museum. In 2005 Woods was featured at the Yukon International Storytelling Festival in Whitehorse, and in 2006 he was the first Canadian featured at the Los Angeles Storytelling Festival. In 2007 Woods released his first CD, had a story in rotation on Talk Story Radio out of Hawaii and was the IMAGO Artist of the Month for July. He has performed at festivals, events, cafes, churches and pubs all over North America.
Several people have praised Woods’ engaging performances: “I have never seen anything like the Great Wooden Trio. The mix of song and story make them engaging, unique and interesting. I highly recommend them for any situation.” — Laura Dunseith, Magic 106.1 FM.

Woods has the rare gift of being able to turn even the most ordinary
happening into a great story. The tales that he weaves are so
captivating that I often have to remind myself that I'm on the radio and
have to tend to the mixing board. Brad has had me laughing and crying
in the same sitting on more than one occasion. To me, this is a mark of a
top knotch storyteller."

THE WARPED 45s

The most common question for a band is: “What type of music do you play?” and acclaimed Toronto quintet The Warped 45s, armed with their new album Matador Sunset, have a handful of uncommon answers: “Northern Gothic.” “Back Porch of the Apocalypse.” “Alt-Country Noir.”
The language of the songs, the beauty and the grit, conjures the likes of Alice Munro, Flannery O’Connor or William Faulkner: “I will find the gilded palace and I’ll bask there unabated.” “Carl made his money fast playing Faro and five card draw. And he soaked all of that money into demon alcohol.” “I saw a pale horse come riding through a stand of flaming birch. The setting sun was a bareback rider / Know a fever will one day burn the earth.”
Often called unique within the roots-rock genre, The Warped 45s, like every band, inevitably draw comparisons. Like The Band, they write durable, earthy songs with superb vocal arrangements. Like Blue Rodeo, they have two singer-songwriter frontmen who’ve known each other since childhood in first cousins Dave McEathron and Ryan Wayne McEathron. Like The Weakerthans, they present unique, arresting images in novel ways: “hard-charging the red cape of a matador sunset” as a metaphor for touring, and “carried away on the aluminum wings of the great rivet-speckled bird” to describe an airplane flight. They’ve been called Canada’s Drive By Truckers.

After a winter holed up in the studio, again with producer John Critchley, The Warped 45s have emerged with Matador Sunset. Raising the bar on an impressive debut, the band’s sophomore full length album cements their position among the many talented artists and bands that have made lasting contributions to the Canadian musical iconography.

the FABULOUS GINN SISTERS

“Lipstick noir doesn’t come any more tingly than titular lead-off, ‘You Should’ve Known’, a midnight motorcycle ride of lust and regret,” says Raul Hernandez of the Austin Chronicle. Media acclaim continues to build for the recently released album by The Fabulous Ginn Sisters, You Can’t Take A Bad Girl Home. Produced by acclaimed singer-songwriter Fred Eaglesmith, the disc was recently affirmed as fabulous by the Philadelphia Daily News for how the duo “live up to their billing with sultry, sometimes-harmonizing takes on Texas-toned Americana (country, voodoo blues, twangy waltzes and honky-tonk).”
The San Antonio Express-News notes how “Austin's Fabulous Ginn Sisters — Tiffani and Brit Ginn — sound woozy, boozy and road-tempered on this confessional outing,” praising the album’s “spooky garage-rock vibe.” The sisters earn favorable comparisons like how “’Baton Rouge’ is a rumbling blues favored these days by Bob Dylan. But just when the harmonizing sisters (born in Schulenburg) sound maybe a little too threateningly forlorn, they knock off a sweet Leigh Nash-worthy ditty such as ‘Share Our Secrets.’

From the oceanside forests and farms of Canada’s West Coast, comes the free-range style of O’mally, a fresh face from British Columbia’s Gulf Islands, and a breakout artist with a distinctive sound. O’mally’s well paced clawhammer banjo and acoustic guitar layer her strong and earthy vocals, and are complimented by the clear harmonies of fiddle player Elise Boeur, culminating in a collection of delightfully orchestrated yet simple old time and folk songs. Since the May 2010 release of her debut album “Speck”, O’mally has enjoyed a swift foray into the spotlight of popular roots music. She’s toured the lengths of the country for festivals and shows, hit #3 on the national earshot folk/roots charts, sustained time on many regional charts, and continues to attract the attention of swaths of new fans, peers, and media. She’s caught the ear of many a radio station, including every campus and community station between Victoria and Toronto, and Canada’s national radio network, the CBC.

Lately he's been touring the country with noted singer-song writer Brock Zeman and appears on his latest albums (The Bourbon Sessions and Hundred Dollar Difference), which were also produced by Dan.
Now, at long last, we get Walsh solo with Diesel & Smokes (Busted Flat Records), the first release where the spotlight falls on Walsh's instrumental genius. But in true Walsh style, his original compositions with dobro, lap steel and electric, baritone and acoustic guitars (and more) are not at all showy, but understated, moody -- and mesmerizing.

Jay Aymar’s an ordinary guy, with an extraordinary talent. He writes songs — almost every day — and that’s a gift most folk are not blessed with. And, three or four days every week, he’s standing in front of people playing those songs and telling those stories. Could be in a bar on Toronto’s Danforth Avenue, or a hotel in Humboldt, Saskatchewan, or someone’s living room in Morden, Manitoba. Could be at a festival in British Columbia, or a coffee house in New Brunswick, or a tavern in Tobermory. Wherever you discover him, you know one thing right off: This man’s the real deal. No pretension, no airs, no showbiz bullshit. Plain as a Tim Hortons double-double and as straight at the highway between Regina and Calgary.

Dr. Pinkham's Travelling Medicine Show

Ladies and gentlemen.... the elusive Dr. Pinkham is very proud to announce that after decades of research and numerous experiments conducted in his maritime laboratory, he has at long last perfected and patented a tuneful tincture, one hundred percent guaranteed effective to lift spirits and alleviate ailments of the weary mind and heavy heart. A consummate yet humble medical man, Dr. Pinkham has entrusted three of Canada's finest musicianers with the task of bringing his discovery to folks across the country with an oldtyme traveling variety show featuring the finest distillation of authentic roots music. Ukulele bluesman Manitoba Hal and trad-warbler Allison Brown will present evenings of folk, blues, and country music showcasing both traditional material and original songs as they traverse Canada's highways from Moonstone, Ontario to Hope, British Columbia through June and July of 2010.
The duo of songsters bring Dr. Pinkham's until now "secret serum" to audiences astonished by its powerful healing effects; a tonic exceptionally effectual on the ears, mind, heart and soul...! Dr. Pinkham does not subscribe to quackery; trust Manitoba Hal & Allison Brown as they bring his musical medicinals to your town!
Manitoba Hal is a muti-instrumentalist and the consummate blues ukulele man. He is a powerful vocalist, with a voice as smooth and sweet as Tupelo honey but he can growl like a hurricane on a hot Louisiana night. Hal is charismatic and engaging on stage leading the audience in a journey through juke joints and roadside chicken joints. Old gospel songs are played alongside stories of lost love and murder. With songwriter's roots in eerie folk - murder ballads and killer floods - and player’s roots in the deep, dark, fixin' to die blues, this is a man who can sing the word "lonesome" like he means it, and no mistake. www.manitobahal.com

Allison Brown likes her religion a little bit gritty, takes her country music with a side of syrup and keeps her folk as dusty as the ol’ cabin floor. With a hatful of broken hearts, bad weather, toils of the road and leaps of faith, Allison’s crafted originals matched with classic roots repertoire reflect the striking conviction she brings to her sweet and powerful singing. Her second recording; “Viper At The Virgin’s Feet” reveals deep explorations of gospel and roots music surrounding originals forged from the fires of folk tradition. Allison brings her truest self to her collection of songs and to the stage in a refreshing conversation with the audience.

CHRIS CHARMICHAEL

Every great music scene has its anchors, people who never quite get their due from the public, but who are the backbone of sounds and successes. I'm talking about guys like Derek O'Brien and Bill Campbell in Austin, Texas, Steve Freund and David Maxwell in Chicago, Junior Watson in Los Angeles, and Chris Carmichael in Winnipeg, Canada. It may sound a little out of place to group Winnipeg with Austin, Chicago, and L.A., but the reality is that the music scene in Winnipeg is every bit as vibrant - arguably even more so - than cities much more widely recognized. Acts like The Perpetrators, Big Dave McLean, Righteous Ike, Romi Mayes, the Scott Nolan Band, they're all world-class talents whose reputations continue to grow locally and internationally, and they all have something in common: Chris Carmichael. As one of the most in-demand guitarists and drummers in Winnipeg's remarkable roots and blues music community, he has provided a wealth of talent and experience to countless recording sessions and live performances. Now, he brings forth his own album, a work long overdue, and one that showcases all of his talents.
After years of sharing his six-string skills with numerous local bands, Chris Carmichael steps into the forefront and shows he's more than just a guitarist-for-hire..... On his debut solo album, he wrote all the material, plays almost all the instruments himself and helps out with production duties. Being a multi-tasker doesn't mean he ignored any other aspect of his self-titled effort. As anyone who has seen him live knows, he can handle any musical situation and style, but on these 11 tracks he sticks with roots-rock, kicking things off with the driving, urgent Nowhere. He gets gritty on Gone, uses some vocal effects to enhance Danger (which features one of the best riffs on the album) and slows things down a bit for Pop Song and Far Away Gone..... With a well-honed sense of melody, and hooks aplenty, Carmichael proves he's more than just a sideman.... -Rob Williams, Winnipeg Free Press |

ALLISON LICKLEY

Allison Lickley is a singer/songwriter that charms audiences with her stories and captures them with her songs. Known for her honest, intimate performances, her voice is often compared to those of Joni Mitchell and Sarah McLachlan. Wolf/Furey Productions writes that Allison is a “…painter of musical vistas both tender and sweeping, with a voice as clear and rich as a star-swept Canadian winter sky.” Lickley has released her first full-length, fully-produced record, You Might Find Me Here. This twelve-song album is the culmination of a year’s work with LA/Montreal producer/engineer, Robert-Eric Gaskell. You Might Find Me Here is a fusion of Lickley’s minimalist folk style and Gaskell’s urban music background. The album has already started garnering attention from the critics; of You Might Find Me Here, CBC’s Dan Lessard writes: “Allison Lickley has a haunting quality to her voice and lyrics that compel you to play every track on her disc. This up-and-coming young lady has soul, track to track, and by listening to her music, you get the sense you know her.” In 2009 the album was nominated for Best Vocal Performance on a Recording, Best Songwriter, and Best Album at the 2009 Northern Ontario Music and Film Awards. Lickley was the first artist in the seven years of NOMFA’s existence to be nominated for three awards. The first track, Smoky Nights, took home Best Vocal Performance on a Recording.

With multiple tours across Canada, a month of concerts in the Himalayan Kingdom of Bhutan, regular interviews and radio-play on CBC Radio One and Two (including Vinyl Café), song placement in films, and two previously released EPs, Lickley has only just begun. The next year will be a busy one for Lickley as she continues to promote her album with tours across Canada and the United States..... and of course, Pappy's Cafe is part of the itinerary!

SHEENA GROBB AND JAYLENE JOHNSON

Sheena Grobb has honed her emotionally stirring performance style with an impressive repertoire of original songs. By testing the limits of her musicality as a singer/songwriter/pianist/guitarist, Sheena released the album "Safe Guarded Space" in August, 2006. Her fan base has now exploded locally and forged throughout Canada and internationally into the USA, UK, and Australia. “Musically, Safe Guarded Space, is stunningly diverse, with flowing quartet accompaniment, classical guitar sequences, funky drumming, and Grobb's unique and soothing vocals and harmonies… You will be lucky to hear Grobb trespassing old familiar territory in a new, courageous way with Safe Guarded Space.” Fiona Muldrew (Herizons Magazine, 2007)

Inspired by the likes of Sarah Slean, Damien Rice, David Gray, and other literary performers, Sheena's songs are underscored by vocals that rip and soothe simultaneously. From the soul-stirring melodies of Character to the catchy jazz beat of Back Row, Sheena weaves seamlessly through themes of sacrifice without reward, success despite failure, and opinion without judgment. Combined with intricate piano compositions and edgy guitar solos, Sheena defines thoughtful reflections on life that lead her audiences to find themselves in the roots of her music. Sheena's following is a reflection of her universal appeal as a quiet recorder of the human condition.

Jaylene Johnson a young artist from Manitoba, just released her second full-length project, Finding Beautiful, a fine and virtually unclassifiable record that delights and surprises at every turn. Alternating between arty, piano-based tunes and songs driven by gently strummed acoustic guitar, Johnson displays a wonderfully literate lyrical style that replaces direct statement with allegory and metaphorical prose. "Butterfly Girl" is a beautifully relaized tale of the joy and discovery of new life, given extra heft by a typically understated vocal by Johnson; her sweet delivery belies the well of emotion just beneath the surface. Along with subtle echoes of Sarah McLachlan, Johnson's music recalls some lesser known Canadian artists (like Nelly Furtado and Jane Siberry) who may have inspired her atmospheric brand of artistic pop. The sound is perfectly complimented by the production of Eldon Winter and Stephen Rendall, a duo who rarely fail to find the perfect setting for a song.
A truly nice surprise coming from the independent world, Jaylene Johnson will appeal to those who are looking for substance-filled pop, but with a slightly different slant.
She was awarded Contemporary Pop Song of the year by the US Gospel Music Association in 2002, and FINDING BEAUTIFUL was nominated for a Western Canadian Music Award and five Covenant Awards in 2004. Songs from that record received national airplay on CBC and CCM radio, and found numerous placements in television with Sony Pictures Television and NBC Universal.
Her success at acquiring licenses for television caught the attention of Casablanca Media Publishing in 2006 with whom she worked under contract until recently. In 2008 alone she wrote with over fifty writers in Los Angeles, Nashville, Toronto, Vancouver and Winnipeg and showcased for NBC Universal and ABC Disney in LA. She has also landed cuts with several independent artists.
The Winnipeg Sun said:
Jaylene Johnson's messages and melodies are accessible enough to make Finding Beautiful enjoyable whatever your beliefs. The fact that her undeniably angelic pipes seem equally influenced by goddesses like Joni Mitchell and Sarah McLachlan is no sin either.

ANDREA RAMOLO

Since releasing her debut album “Thank You For the Ride” in October of 2008, Andrea Ramolo has become known as the “tireless road warrior” having completed two East Coast tours, gigs all over Ontario, and a Nashville showcase. Most impressive, however, was the five month cross Canada tour of 80 shows that she booked all herself, from Ontario to the West coast, up to the Yukon, and all the way to Newfoundland and back.
After 40,000 kms of living in her van and developing a fan base all over the great North, Andrea is set to be working on her second release. She’s been described as the antidote to too much Joni Mitchell, a tougher Dolly Parton, a sexier Janis Joplin, and has even been compared to Canada’s own Serena Ryder; but Ramolo has a sound that is all her own. Drawing stories from real life experiences, her songs are direct, to the point, funny, sexy, and vulnerable all at the same time. She is a born performer who oozes confidence and sensuality and has been described as fearless, raw, and emotional.

This past year, Andrea was featured at the South Country Fair in Alberta, the Sunstroke Music Festival in Whitehorse, the Saskatoon Berry Festival in Mortlach, In the Dead of Winter Music Festival in Halifax, The Sasquatch Festival in Northern Alberta and The World Skills Festival at the Calgary Stampede grounds.
Andrea has shared the stage with Stacey Earle and Mark Stuart, Colin Linden, Twilight Hotel, Coco Love Alcorn, and Slowcoaster (to name a handful), and has lent her vocal talents to recordings for The Trews, Martha and the Muffins, Cindy Doire, and The Strip. In 2009, she won the Toronto Exclusive Magazine awards for Best Female Folk Artist, Best Folk Album, and Best Blues Song. She was also asked to be a guest speaker at the 2009 Ontario Council of Folk Festivals Conference in Ottawa on booking independent tours. This young woman has years of songwriting, singing, and success ahead of her.
Andrea was cast in Disney’s made-for-TV movie Once Upon a Mattress, starring Carol Burnett and Tracy Ullman. She recorded two songs for the movie’s soundtrack at the CBC in Vancouver.

ROGER MARIN BAND
To Roger Marin the vision of white lines on a highway is a very familiar sight. Raised by his musician father, Roger saw many different schools and towns throughout his childhood and grew accustomed to new places.

By the time he had turned thirteen he had already played his first gig. Performing alongside his Father and Uncle, he would be forced to wait in the kitchen between sets, because he was too young to be in the bar. It was an excellent opportunity to learn his chops though and it left him with a passion to be a musician.
For several years Roger covered mile after mile on the Fred Eaglesmith bus where he was the band's electric and pedal steel guitar player. On the Eaglesmith bus, Marin had once again found himself being mentored, though this time as a songwriter. Sharing 210 square feet with fellow singer/songwriters Fred Eaglesmith and the late Willie P. Bennett has paid off. In fact, co-writes with both appeared on his debut CD Roger Marin Jr.

With the release of Roger Marin Jr. and High Roads he has been touring with his own band, the Roger Marin Band. The band consists of a talented crew including Phil Bosley on bass / vocals, Matt Keighan on drums / vocals and Roger himself as front man on lead guitar and vocals.
The 33-year-old Marin has worked with the likes of Willie Nelson, Junior Brown, Del McCoury, and Delbert McClinton. While Rogers fulltime job was backing the songs of others, he has successfully changed gears from sideman to front man and his quickly growing audience loves it.

Acoustic Guitar Magazine likened MacDonald's vocals, lyrics, and intricate fingerstyle guitar style to "a collaboration between Nick Drake and a mid-1970s Bruce Cockburn".

Ross deals in subtlety, intimacy and nuance with a tunesmiths hand that coins songs and music with a haunting and poignant quality.
Born of a jazz musician father he returned to his musical roots after some years underground as a geologist and now plies his trade not only as an internationally touring songwriter but also as a jazz turned folk-roots drummer for the acclaimed Australian group The Waifs.

GORDIE TENTREES

Out of the Canadian north country Gordie Tentrees releases his 3rd album "Mercy or Sin" featuring his band of 7 years Ken Hermanson and Matt King, produced by Juno Winner Bob Hamilton. This is the much anticipated follow up to "Bottleneck to Wire 2007" and " 29 loads of Freight 2004"

"The concert kicked off with a strong set by Gordie Tentrees, who has been opening for the band (Fred Eaglesmith) on recent dates, and it is apparent to this listener that Tentrees has been working hard in the couple of years since he opened the same venue for Kelly Joe Phelps. His ease and ability on resophonic slide guitar and rack mount harmonica suggest some serious time spent honing his craft; and the inclusion of an electrified stomp board lends authority to his steady tapping left foot. Good tunes with strong vocals and deft fingerpicking make for an enjoyable presentation and the addition of Eaglesmith's sidemen, Mattie Simpson on electric guitar and Luke Stackhouse on string bass, to finish off Tentrees portion of the show was an added treat. Tentrees is a talent on the move, and moving in good company"

Gordie has toured relentlessly in North America, Europe and the UK, building an international buzz in the roots music world. He has opened for Fred Eaglesmith and Kelly Joe Phelps, shared stages with the D-Rangers, Rick Fines, Blackie & The Rodeo Kings, performed a CBC Saturday Night Blues concert, and showcased at North American Folk Alliance, Western Canadian Music Awards and South by Southwest.

" I was in a room with Serena Ryder, Roxanne Potvin, and Kate Fenner and we were all listening to Nora Jones..... I heard these ladies all wrapped up in one.....Heather Blush..... so sad for the rest of Canada who has not yet had the pleasure to embrace the superb songwriting abilities and performance techniques this lady brings to the stage " -Longevity John, Duncan Garage Showroom, Duncan B.C.

DANYLUK AND CARD

"Cory Danyluk and Sarah Card are a duo that define all the best attributes of a true musical and creative partnership and one that continues to nurture a sound that is as refreshing and organic, as it is their own." -Peter North, CKUA Radio, Edmonton Canada
"Acoustic music of the very tasty and detailed kind. Yes indeed, there are still serious musicians who know their job, and this Duo has such musical artisans."-Andrea Stolle, Radio Teutoburger, Germany
"Artists with longer careers could learn about sounding interested in their material from these two."-Les Siemieniuk, Penguin Eggs Magazine, Edmonton, Canada

Longtime fans of the Canadian roots scene, who may have listened to Frazier and DeBolt in the seventies or newcomers who found their way into the deep Canadian pool of roots music talent via a more contemporary artist like Kathleen Edwards will find many touchstones on this latest recording from Danyluk and Card, as the two provide another link in what is a very sturdy chain.
Whether it’s a verse from a Danyluk-pennned cracked country ballad where a solitary lyric gives
way to a sweeping and bluesey fiddle line from Card or songs shaded with glimpses of hope and
determination, Card and Danyluk have created a warm, sobering and alluring sound that draws on
west of centre country, blues, and folk traditions.

Cat Jahnke

"Having worked with many different composers on various film and television projects, I found Cat Jahnke to be the most inspired, committed and enthusiastic collaborator. Cat is a joy to work with and I hope she can score all of my future projects"
-Robert Kirbyson; Director; Hollywood Ca

Cat Jahnke's musical evolution has played out in a very linear: from "Twinkle Twinkle" on the upright as a child to composition classes in university; from girl with the six string to front man for the band; from misguided boy to that imperfect gentleman and the inspirational heartbreak that trudges in the wake. In the spirit of a true prarie girl raised in a landscape that allows a clear view for miles, Cat's fate has been evident for her 26 years.

"Winnipeg's Cat Jahnke dubs her debut album "None of Those Things", but her music, in fact, is all of the following things: classy, well-crafted and highly accessible. Count CBC Radio among Cat's many fans. Since her freshman album's release, her songs have picked up airplay on programs originating in every part of the country. We anxiously await her next release....."
-Mark Reaume; CBC Radio Librarian, Toronto ON
"Her voice is as clear as a minus 30 C January day on the Praries"-Cam Fuller, Star Phoenix, Saskatoon, SK

TIM HUS

TIM HUS is seen here in this photo sharing an herbal tea with legendary country star IAN TYSON.
Tim Hus has a voice sweeter than a Husqvarna chainsaw, a wit that is sharper than rusty barbed wire, and a list of songs longer than a Saskatchewan fence line! Following his acclaimed CD Huskies & Husqvarnas comes the highly anticipated fourth album (his first for Stony Plain Records) Bush Pilot Buckaroo joining Corb Lund and the legendary Ian Tyson on the label. Hus comes at his audience like a runaway rig, while firing off image-laden lyrics with the intensity of a western gunslinger.

Tim tours and performs concerts with his band Tim Hus & The Rocky Mountain Two, featuring Peterbilt Pete Christian on lead guitar and Spider Bishop on upright string bass. Pete is a talented and versatile musician having played music professionally around the world. Solid licks and agreeable melodies reinforce the songs while Spider lays down a solid rhythm with doghouse slap and a thick groove. Occasionally the group is joined by Pat Phillips on the drums.
Tim and his band will continue to perform in support of Bush Pilot Buckaroo with performances at festivals, folk clubs and music venues throughout Canada.

Ron Leary

Windsor-Ontario based artist Ron Leary has quickly been gaining recognition as one of Canada's most important emerging roots artists, much the result of the debut release "theroadinbetween" (2006) followed by an intense year of touring Canada coast-to-coast. In performance, Ron Leary always makes a strong impression on his audience by delivering powerful songs with disarming honesty, humour and humility. Whether it be with the intensity of the full band, as a folk duo with harmonica player Kelly "Mr. Chill" Hoppe, or simply as a solo artist, each show is a unique journey where even Ron never quite knows where or how it will unfold or end. But his golden voice will melt you in your seat, with a presence that will keep you on the edge of that seat and slightly off balance.
The debut release "theroadinbetween" has been gaining some stunning accolades from across the country, being showcased on CBC Radio 3, used by CBC icon Stuart MacLean in his Vinyl Café Program, as well as five songs being featured in CBC TV's summer program Eleven Cameras. The debut also charted well nationally on campus radio, spending numerous months on the National Campus College Radio Charts.

Jon Brooks
In June 2007, was invited to play at the unveiling of the Irish Famine Memorial in Toronto for 2000 invited guests, including Irish President Mary McAleese, Premier Dalton McGuinty, Mayor David Miller and others.
2007 Canadian Folk Music Award nominee - Best Songwriter 2007
Canadian Folk Music Award nominee - Best Songwriter

Canadian folk music is failing its grand tradition of
truthful storytelling in times of war, says Ontario
singer-songwriter Jon Brooks.
The straight-talking musician is nominated for a Canadian Folk
Music Award for his disc of Canadian war stories, "Ours and the
Shepherds," a stirring collection of tales touching on the Korean
War, the genocide in Rwanda and Canadian peacekeepers in
Afghanistan.
It includes songs about James Loney, the northern Ontario activist held hostage in Iraq while working for a Christian pacifist organization, Romeo Dallaire, the former general who led an ill-fated United Nations peacekeeping force in Rwanda and Sgt. Tommy Prince, the decorated Canadian aboriginal veteran who died a forgotten hero in 1977.
While artists like Neil Young, Steve Earle, Green Day and Bruce Springsteen have all produced albums critical of the U.S.
involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan, Brooks says the Canadian experience has been largely ignored.
The 39-year-old adds that he has even been turned down for gigs
because of his provocative portraits.
"They said, `We're not quite sure, we think you might be a bit
intense for our audience."' he says of being rejected by some
venues in northwestern Ontario.
........well not here at Pappy's Cafe in Wabigoon. Welcome back Jon, its always good to have you back on our stage.

The tales that he weaves are so captivating that I often have to remind myself that I'm on the radio and have to tend to the mixing board. Some bands start out in Liverpool England, some start out in Dallas Texas, and some in Dryden Ontario. Regardless of where they started, millions of us sure are glad they did. SETTING THE STANDARD will commence their band-manship and embark on a journey that will hopefully take them around the world. They sound like Dallas Green with a touch of Oasis, a pinch of Clapton, a few slices of Weezer, some ground City & Color and add a little blues, mix ingredients together in great venue and you got yourself some STANDARD. Featuring Kyle Moonias and David Huffman on guitars and Will Durand on vocals.

DEL BARBER

Born and raised on the prairies, Del Barber has found a new home on stage, winning audiences across Canada and the United States with raw talent and ample doses of charm. In the spirit of legends like Townes Van Zandt, Greg Brown, Emmylou Harris and Steve Earle, Barber dreams new life into old forms with a cutting sense of humour, a hint of cynicism, and songs that span the gulf between the sacred and the profane. This past May, Barber sold out his album release party for his debut, Where the City Ends, at Winnipeg’s Park Theatre.

Since its release, the album has been a frequent presence on campus radio stations across Canada. A thoughtful reflection on place and progress, Where the City Ends is the sound of someone who’s fearless, honest and just plain loves his craft. With one foot in the city and the other on the farm, Barber’s music blends the wise sounds of the folk tradition with the earnest meditations of a prairie troubadour. Del was named one of five local artists to watch in 2009 by the University of Winnipeg's student weekly, The Uniter.
