KAYLA  LUKY
SATURDAY FEBRUARY 18th

Luky’s latest album "The Time it Takes" marks not only a homecoming for the young songstress, but a complete countrification of her sound. Take the sentimental saddle song "Cowboys Are Coming", the banjo-driven boot stomper "Lonesome Ranger" or the aching, heart-breaking "My Flowers Are Empty" with its sad pedal steel and love lost refrain “You left me in shambles, you left me in pain, the summer dragged on and my heart didn’t change.” Metropolitan music makers would be hard-pressed to write a hard-luck song so genuine, but Luky’s small town setting gives it absolute authenticity. There can be a lot of loneliness in a one-bar town, but this is no individual effort.

MIKE LYNCH

WEDNESDAY MARCH 14th

KNOWN for his jesting, Mike Lynch’s serious side is allowed room to grow on the Ontario singer-songwriter’s fifth studio recording.

Will to Survive is a stately song of perseverance and longevity. Songs About the Road is a haunting rocket ride in the driver’s seat of a big rig cruisin’ the Trans Canada, radio blaring, at 4 a.m. House Full of Mirrors possesses an unearthly beauty dictated by fiddle and pedal steel. Turn on the Evening News has Lynch delivering his most honest and heartfelt performance yet. Meanwhile, God Locked the Keys in Her Van demonstrates Lynch hasn’t lost his sense of humour.

Lynch’s writing has never been better and neither has his voice. Like the cassette tapes he sings about on the title track he offers something for fans of everyone from Blue Rodeo to John Prine. Road Map could be the album that has Mike Lynch going places.

KAYLA HOWRAN

MONDAY APRIL 2nd

Kayla Howran sings country music, not by virtue of a Wrangler shirt, but a childhood in Peterborough spent fishing and wrestling dogs. Her songwriting is equal parts original and idiomatic, a fresh but faithful interpretation of the genre and proof that classic country doesn’t have to be old, but it does have to be timeless.

After moving to Toronto, Kayla found a foothold in the country and rockabilly roots of the Queen Street music scene. She and her band, The Fellas, began playing at The Cameron House in September 2010, and quickly established one of the hottest weekly residences on Queen Street. Every Friday night Kayla’s powerful vocals fill the bar as she and The Fellas spur on a dance floor full of patrons with bourbon-soaked two-steps, meandering tales of love lost, and everything in between.

Kayla has a rare ability to lean on her influences without imitating them, which lends a genuine quality to her music that is often absent from many of her country contemporaries. She sings with the conviction of someone who has lived every bit of joy, agony, and heartbreak contained within her songs. However, it is Kayla’s voice that truly sets her apart. Powerful enough to rise above the din of a packed hall, yet with a softness that evokes the tender emotions of transfixed onlookers, Kayla controls the mood of the room with the skill of a baton-wielding maestro.

Kayla Howran’s debut album “Pistol” will be out on Cameron House Records in January 2012, available on iTunes, cameronhouserecords.com, and wherever good music is sold.

BUCKMAN COE

WEDNESDAY APRIL 11th

Buckman Coe was recently voted second for Best Unsigned Band in the Georgia Straight Reader's Choice Contest. By The Mountain's Feet, the new album, is a collection of conscious roots rock that feels as good as the sun beating down on your face. His songs are progressive and contemporary, and convey an appreciation for life that's seldom expressed with such genuineness and depth.

MANITOBA HAL

THURSDAY APRIL 26th

Manitoba Hal is an accomplished guitarist, songwriter and ukulele player. He uses a combination of looping technology and other effects to create a one-man-band performance that is truly one-of-a-kind. His takes on traditional blues songs are fresh and inventive combining them with Tin Pan Alley, hit parade, rock and rural country form and style.

Hal began playing ukulele in 1995 after receiving one as a gift from his grandfather. Hal was already an accomplished guitarist and the ukulele provided a missing element to his sound. His blues guitar style transferred easily to ukulele and his unique combination of finger picking and strumming created an instantly accessible sound that complements his gospel tinged vocal style. Early blues performers such as Son House, Robert Johnson and Taj Mahal are among his influences but he is equally shaped by Colin Linden, Ken Hamm, David Essig, Stephen Fearing, Big Dave Mclean and lesser known folk and roots artists.

Manitoba Hal has two international ukulele endorsements (RISA from Germany and aNueNue from Taiwan), has been featured at the New York Ukulele Festival 2008, Ukulele Ceilidh 2005, 2007, 2011, Great Canadian Ukulele Expo 2003, 2004 and the Ukulele Hall of Fame 2001. He has a signature tenor ukulele and is one of a handful of authentic blues performers performing with the ukulele today.

SCARLETT JANE

THURSDAY MAY 17th

(4 person band)    Featuring

ANDREA RAMOLO & CINDY DOIRE

Andrea has lent her vocal talents to recordings for Martha and the Muffins, Cindy Doire, and The Strip; has opened for Stacey Earle, Fred Eaglesmith, Angel Band, ‘Law and Order’s Jeremy Sisto, and more; and has shared the stage with some of Canada’s best, including Linda McRae and Colin Linden. In 2009, she won the Toronto Exclusive Magazine awards for Best Female Folk Artist, Best Folk Album, and Best Blues Song. She was a guest speaker at the 2009 Ontario Council of Folk Festivals Conference in Ottawa on booking your own tours; showcased at the American Folk Alliance via the Sweet Beaver Suite in Memphis; and has recently returned from a successful full band album release tour coast to coast that was supported by the Canada Council for the Arts.

Andrea is by far one of the hardest workingwomen in the business and has one of the most soulful voices in the country.

\----------------------------------------------/

Cindy Doire is a road warrior, and she has learned the geography of Canada the hard way: get in the can and drive. You don’t make a lot of money doing this, and you play in small clubs, bars, coffee shops and house concerts in peoples’ homes. Hard work, far too many miles — but you build a fan base, one by one, on the road.

Unlike most of her Canadian contemporaries, however, Cindy also tours extensively in Europe — there were no less than four trips there last year, and there are upcoming 2011 dates in Belgium and France. Her language skills — she also speaks fluent Italian and Spanish — make her foreign trips less stressful, and allows her to build an easy rapport with her listeners.

Now Sticks and Mud has been launched, and the process repeats. Into the van, cross the country, hit the pubs and clubs and festivals and coffee houses. Play showcases for “industry” people. And sing your heart out, night after night after night.

Cindy Doire may be a troubadour, and she’s blessed with a true voice and the gift of creating songs that you can remember. Her energy, laughter and joy on stage make her concerts very special.

Best of all, she’s still a vagabond, and she just might steal your heart.

BILL DURST

WEDNSDAY JUNE 6th

Always an audience favourite, Bill Durst has long been compared to the best guitar player/singer/entertainers anywhere in the world. Bill has written and recorded over 100 songs on ten albums including seven charted Canadian radio hits. After the early success of his band Thundermug in North America and Europe, Bill was acclaimed as one of the top songwriters in Canada, signing with CBS (now Sony) Publishing, and releasing his first two solo albums in 1984 and 1989. In between these two albums, as a side gig, Bill played in “the biggest bar band in Canada” Tres Hombres, a ZZ Top clone band, and that’s how he got his beard started!

JON BROOKS

TUESDAY AUGUST 14th

Great songwriters, like the best artists in any discipline, defy convention and confound those who seek comparisons. Toronto’s Jon Brooks stands among an exalted few in the enduring Canadian song tradition – Leonard Cohen, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Fred Eaglesmith, Bruce Cockburn – as a lyricist, composer and performer with a fierce commitment to his craft and his vision. He’s proud to call himself a folksinger at a time when that particular f-word has ceased to have much meaning to armies of wannabe artists seeking little more than ordinary fame and glory.” Greg Quill , The Toronto Star, January 3, 2010.

He reminds me of Steve Earle, Bruce Cockburn and Ray Bonneville in his honest, gritty vocal delivery and his straight-shooting political songwriting which honours the tradition of folk music without the contrived earnest format of many folk songs.” – Harry Manx , as quoted in The Gulf Island Driftwood, December 2009
